KATHLEEN SIMPSON

A QUICK BIO:

My favorite color is all of them, my favorite kind of brush is a liner, my favorite food is dim sum sesame balls, my favorite thing to read is poems, and my favorite place fluctuates between my apartment, my studio, and the beach (yes, even in the rain - I live in Oregon).

Patterns, texture, words, the dirty sheen of cities, and the beauty of paint itself have always been a part of my art. I have been making art as long as I can remember. My primary interests are drawing and painting, but I have been dabbling in sculpture. I am a big fan of nature. There is a vein of abstract painting that has always run through the art I make.

I’ve used ink, paint, paper, plastic, ice, clay, found objects, dirt, plaster, metal, fabric and words to execute my ideas. I’m focusing, now, mainly on painting and writing and have also been working on building a nonprofit. I have been showing my paintings primarily in small galleries, cafes, shops, universities and restaurants.

I’m in the process of writing a book of poetry.

Please contact me if you’d like a commission, portrait or mural.

HERE IS SOME INFORMATION ABOUT MY PROCESS:

I use acrylic paint most of the time.

I am interested in science, fiction, and their confluence.

I guess I really learned to paint with watercolors and oil paint in middle and high school. Well, I remember taking a painting class as a kid and using tempera too (and being very excited about texture, I glopped tempera the paint on this one painting so thickly it fell off!). So, really, I don’t know when I actually I started  painting. But I suppose I began to paint mostly with acrylics in college, and in various basement studios in various houses I’ve lived in with various fabulous folks in beautiful Portland, Oregon.

I have also recently been working sculpturally with reclaimed plastic shopping bags! Stay tuned to see how this continues to materialize. I am using the bags like fabric or yarn to create plantlike forms and landscapes, even a human heart... so far. The process changes slowly, and since I’ve only been doing it for like a year the changes seem kind of drastic.

Painting is the most spiritual part of my life, and the most spiritual thing that I can think of. Making the art is like communicating with the sacred elements, or often like working for them. The inspiration for my art can be found in memory, in the sea, the land, in plants and animals. My friends and loved ones are my inspiration too. My cat inspires me every day.

Pretty Much I just Really love Painting. Paint itself has a magical quality that makes me giddy. And moving it around and mixing it together is divine. It is the most exciting thing I can think of. Well, besides SCULPTURE, POETRY AND drawing. YEAH.
